What Does an Adjustable Base Actually Do?

An adjustable base lets you raise and lower different sections of your bed — independently — using a remote. Instead of a fixed flat surface, you get a range of positions built around comfort, support, and everyday convenience.

• Independent Back & Leg Elevation — the base raises your back (not just your head) for supported, comfortable reading, watching TV, or working from bed, and raises your legs and feet separately to relieve pressure after a long day.
• Zero Gravity — a preset position that raises your back to around 60° and your thighs to around 45° from the surface — the same neutral body position astronauts use during launch, when leaving Earth's gravity. It reduces pressure on your spine, hips, and lower back and gives a genuine sense of weightlessness.
• Anti-Snore — gently raises the upper body to help keep airways clearer through the night.
• Preset Memory — save your favourite position and return to it at the touch of a button, rather than adjusting from scratch each time.

Choosing the Right Base Type

Before deciding between adjustable models, it's worth checking whether an adjustable base is the right category for you in the first place. Here's how our four base types compare:

• Standard Bed Bases — a solid, fixed-height platform base. The simplest option if you don't need storage or adjustability.
• SlimLine Bed Bases — a lower-profile base (around 260mm high, versus 370-380mm on a standard base), designed to keep your overall bed height sensible when paired with a thick mattress.
• Storage Bed Bases — a gas-lift base with hidden storage underneath, ideal for smaller bedrooms or anyone short on wardrobe space.
• Adjustable Bed Bases — motorised bases with tilt, presets, and (on higher tiers) massage and connectivity features, as covered in this guide.

Split Base or Single Base?

If you share a bed with a partner who prefers a different sleeping position, a split base lets each side move independently — so one of you can sit up and read while the other stays flat. Split bases in our adjustable range are only available in Super King. Every other size comes as a single base that moves as one, which keeps things simpler if you're both happy adjusting together.

Checking Mattress Compatibility

Not every mattress is designed to flex with an adjustable base. Foam and hybrid mattresses with a flexible profile generally work well; very firm, thick, or traditional innerspring mattresses may not.
