Plush vs Medium vs Firm
Plush vs Medium vs Firm
Firmness is one of the most personal decisions in choosing a mattress — what feels supportive to one sleeper can feel too hard or too soft to another. Here's a starting point, not a rule.
Plush
A softer feel with more sink-in cushioning. Often preferred by side sleepers, since it allows the shoulders and hips to sink in slightly, keeping the spine in a more neutral line. Lighter-weight sleepers often find plush comfortable across sleep positions.
Medium
A balanced feel — enough give for comfort, enough support to avoid sinking too far. Works across most sleep positions and body types, which is why it's the most commonly chosen feel.
Firm
A more stable, supportive surface with minimal sink-in. Often preferred by back and stomach sleepers, and by heavier-weight sleepers who need more support to avoid sinking too deep into softer foam.
What Actually Determines the Right Feel
- Sleep position — side sleepers often lean softer, back/stomach sleepers often lean firmer
- Body weight — heavier sleepers typically need firmer support to avoid excess sinkage
- Personal preference — genuinely varies person to person, independent of the above
Please note: this is general guidance, not medical advice. If you have back pain or an existing condition, speak with your doctor, physiotherapist, or another qualified healthcare provider for advice specific to your situation.
Sharing a Bed, Different Preferences?
Several of our NZ-made mattresses can be built as a split mattress — two halves joined by a zip, each with its own feel. If you and a partner disagree on firmness, this is a genuine way to both get it right without compromising.
The Only Reliable Way to Know
Spec sheets can only tell you so much — firmness is something you feel, not something you can fully judge from a description. Visit our Newmarket showroom at 25B Broadway to try Plush, Medium, and Firm side by side before you decide.
