Mattress Buying Guide

Mattress Buying Guide

Choosing a mattress comes down to four decisions: size, feel, budget, and whether you need a base. Here's how to think through each one.

1. Start With Size

If you're replacing a mattress in an existing bed, measure your current one rather than assuming the name matches — "Double" and "Long Double," or "Single" and "Long Single," are different lengths, and it's an easy mix-up. See our Mattress Sizes NZ Guide for exact measurements.

2. Choose Your Feel

Feel is personal — it depends on your weight, sleep position, and preference, not just what's popular. We cover this properly in Plush vs Medium vs Firm, but the short version: side sleepers often prefer softer support at the shoulders and hips, back and stomach sleepers often do better with firmer support. The only reliable way to know is to try it — visit our Newmarket showroom before you decide.

3. Mattress Only, or Mattress & Base?

If your existing base is still in good condition and the right size, mattress-only saves you money. If your base is old, sagging, or an odd size, a matching set avoids buying a mattress that outperforms a tired base underneath it.

4. Match Your Budget to the Right Range

We carry two different kinds of mattress ranges, and they suit different needs:

  • Ready-to-go imported ranges (SleepMax, MLILY) — dependable, no long wait, straightforward value
  • NZ-made ranges (Solace, CozyCloud, DreamNest, LunaRest, Restiva, Nidra) — made to order, with fabric and firmness options, and our split-mattress build available

Sharing a Bed With Different Preferences?

If you and a partner want different firmness levels, several of our NZ-made mattresses can be built as a split mattress — two halves, each with its own feel, joined with a zip. It's a genuine way to avoid compromising on comfort. Ask us about it when you order.
